9 Best Natural Hair Products for Type 4 Natural Hair

Updated: Apr 12, 2020

I have kept my hair in its natural state my whole life but unfortunately I have had to restart my natural hair journey over twice, due to dealing with extensive heat damage in the past. Last year, I was able to restore my hair back to its original thick and healthy state. In the midst of this process of restoring my hair, I discovered some new products that have become a staple in my hair routine. In my experience, and based on other people’s reviews, these are some of the best (mostly inexpensive) products that you will find work surprisingly well on your kinky or curly hair. My aim for my hair is hydration, hydration and more hydration. So if you want hydrated and juicy hair - keep reading.

Leave-In Conditioner

The Creme of Nature ‘Pure Honey’ line has been capturing my attention based on the products that I have tried so far. The leave-in conditioner, like the other products from the line, contains pure honey, coconut oil and shea butter. The formula is lightweight yet still creamy enough to coat my hair which allows the product to absorb into my strands. It has quickly become an essential part of my routine as it helps prevent breakage. However, as much as I like the formula, I don’t care for the pump on the bottle. I have found that the pump makes it harder to dispense enough product.

Moisturising Cream

The Cantu Moisturising Curl Activator Cream provides my hair with an amazing slip which makes it way easier for me to detangle and comb out my hair. It’s made with 100% pure shea butter and formulated without chemicals or harsh ingredients. My hair becomes so soft when I apply this and is a crucial part of my routine.

Curl Cream

I have been using the Creme Of Nature Moisture Whip Twisting Cream for almost a year at this point and have gone through four pots of this gold! It has helped me to achieve some of the best twist-outs I have ever had!The formula is thick and super creamy which is great for my thick hair as it requires a lot of product to achieve my desired curl definition. The only con to this product is that it can leave white flakes so I have been steaming my hair for about 10mins when I finish my twists so that it will completely melt into my hair.

Another favourite of mine is the Christophe Robin Luscious Curl Cream which is made with flaxseed oil, is 99% natural and smells amazing! If you enjoy a slight natural fragrance in your hair products, this has a distinct nutty smell. The thick and creamy formula makes my hair feel deeply hydrated and moisturised. However, this is more expensive than my other products and I don’t feel that 150ml is worth the asking price. It is definitely on the more premium end of natural hair products.

Protein Treatment

Monthly protein treatment’s are a crucial part of my hair routine. I have found that they keep my hair strong, healthy, thick and my curls popping! The ORS Hair Mayonnaise is my go-to treatment and is under £6 which I consider inexpensive compared to other brands. When I started using protein treatments, I noticed that my hair began to growing quicker than before!

I opt for hair mayonnaise as it’s thick and coats my hair well. I steam my hair for about 45 minutes and then let the treatment sit for another 20 minutes before washing it out.

Scalp Treatment

I’ve written about the Sulphur 8 Treatment in my recent blog posts so I will link that here. It is still my favourite scalp treatment, very effective and I highly recommend it.

Styling Gel

There are many different types of Eco Styler gel, I have tried a few but my staple favourite is the Eco Styling Gel Black Castor & Flaxseed Oil. I’ve found that this smooths down my fly-aways better than any other styling gel. It doesn't give me any residue or hardness and my hair still feels soft to the touch. The only negative is that this is not long-lasting or effective in controlling my edges so I use a separate edge control for that.

Edge Control

I have been using the Dr Miracle Edge Holding Gel for years now and I’m still adamant about how effective this product is for me. I recommend it to everyone who asks me about a good edge control. My edges stay laid for a long time while using this but at the same time it doesn’t pull on my edges, feel hard or leave any gunky residue. A key ingredient is the Jojoba oil that adds to the shine and condition.

Oil Sealant

Almond oil is lightweight and great in sealing in the moisture of my twist-outs. I apply some to my hands as I take down my twists so that I can avoid unnecessary fly-always while providing extra moisture and shine to my hair. The extra moisture is needed as my twist-outs normally last up to a week so I like my hair to be stay extra hydrated due to the windy, cold and wet weather conditions of the UK.
