8hr WEAR TEST: Maybelline Dream Urban Cover foundation

Updated: Apr 8, 2020

Over the weekend I was in Boots looking for my summer shade in the Maybelline 24hr Superstay foundation when I came across this one. This foundation was released in February of this year - so its pretty new! What grabbed my attention about this product was that it is described as 'full coverage', has 'SPF 50' (my go-to strength in SPF), 'lightweight' and 'anti-pollution'. I live in the city of London (UK) so the anti-pollution claim was the icing on the cake for me!

Product Description:

Flawless Coverage + City Protection + SPF 50

Discover the new Dream Urban Cover Lightweight Full Coverage Makeup from Maybelline, its first foundation to combine full coverage with SPF 50 broad spectrum.

As well as being smooth, light and easy to apply, this protective foundation is enriched with anti-oxidants such as Vitamin E, Vitamin B3 and baicaline and helps to form a shield and defend skin from pollution.

This lightweight full coverage foundation comes in 20 different shades and is best suited to normal/dry skin types. Dream Urban Cover will smooth away signs of dull skin to create a natural and healthy looking complexion.

Dermatologically tested. Suitable for sensitive skin. Non-comedogenic (doesn’t clog pores). Clinically tested to lock in moisture. Retails for £10.99 in Boots.

Disclaimer: When I was buying this, I was not sure which skin type it was for. I have Oily & Acne Prone skin so please bare this in mind as you read this review. To be honest, even if I did know I still would have bought it because the claims are amazing lmao!

Let's talk about the Shade Range...

There are 20 shades in total. It's obvious that the shade range needs work, more shades need to be added as there are a lot of in between shades missing. I was scrolling through the comments on Maybelline's instagram page when they announced this product. I saw comments from people saying they didn't have a shade, which is annoying - everyone should have a shade in any foundation or complexion product that they want to wear.

That being said, I like how the spectrum from light to dark is even. A lot of these beauty brands who have a small amount of shades available, will create a ton of lighter shades and only a few dark shades. Thats not the case with this foundation, I can see the effort they have put into the shade range to try and make sure that every skin tone is represented. I hope Maybelline comes out with more shades of this foundation in the future.

Anyway, lets get into this 8hr Wear Test:

Mother Nature recently decided to visit and she also decided to wage war on my skin. So considering the fact that I have a lot of texture/scarring at the moment - this foundation already had a thumbs up from me! The 'full-coverage' claim is definitely true. Even though my skin is not healthy at the moment, this product gave me a healthy-looking complexion as soon as I applied it. When applying it, I immediately noticed the dewy finish, it doesn't dry down like the matte foundations I'm used to.

As I mentioned earlier, I have oily skin so I always set my under-eye, smile-lines and bridge of my nose with a loose banana powder. I set the rest of my face with a pressed powder (Maybelline Fit Me powder). I always use a matte setting spray such as the Barry M Matte Setting Spray. The only mistake I made was not using a mattifying primer. I don't like primers so i normally make sure my sunscreen has a matte finish if i want my foundation to stay matte, my go-to is the Lotus SPF 50 Matte sunscreen. However the sunscreen on this day was not a matte one, its the Malibu SPF 50 sunscreen.

I made sure not to blot my face all day because I wanted to see how oily I would get, and as you can see...I was a greaseball by 6:30pm! Now that I know that this is for normal/dry skin types, I am not surprised. However, apart from that - I still loved how my complexion looked! I looked very radiant, the foundation had not seperated (only a little bit in my smile-lines) - the full coverage was still the same. Apart from the oiliness, I was surprised at how this foundation held up throughout the day will I was at work. It is very lightweight and it feels as if you have nothing on your skin, it reminds me of a tinted moisturiser but just full coverage.

After blotting - in my opinion, my face looks pretty good! For 8hrs of wear on oily skin, I would have expected it to start separating a lot on my face and overall look bad but I still looked radiant and my skin looked healthy!

Will I continue to use this product?

Yes I will be using this product as I love how it makes my skin look and feel! It's great for work, everyday ,makeup or running errands as its lightweight and has a natural finish.

I will make sure to set my face well and use a sunscreen/primer with a matte finish to stop my face from getting too oily throughout the day.

Would I recommend this foundation?

Yes I recommend this foundation, especially if you have normal/dry skin! I wouldn't recommend it for nights out or days when your face needs to last more than 8hrs. But its great for errands or everyday makeup!

Have you tried the Dream Urban Cover foundation? What are your thoughts?
